Choose the home shirt if you prefer the team’s familiar primary design, or the away shirt if you like its colours and details more. For everyday wear, neither label is a reason to buy a shirt you do not enjoy. Buy both only when you want two different designs and expect to wear or collect each one.
Your choice involves two separate checks: the design you like and the particular garment you are ordering. Home, away and third describe kit roles; they do not guarantee the same fit, construction or included pieces.
Which design will you actually wear?
Do you want the familiar team look? Start by looking at the home design. That is a preference for its visual identity, not evidence that it is better made. If a particular away shirt is the one you remember or love, there is no need to buy the home shirt first.
Do you want a colour you will actually wear? Compare the alternatives with clothes you already own. A light shirt, a dark shirt and a bright shirt create different combinations, even before you consider a collar or graphic. Pick the design that suits your use rather than assuming that third shirts are always bold or that away shirts are always light.
A concrete comparison: in the Manchester United listings pictured below, the home shirt combines a red body with a fold-over collar; the away shirt combines blue with V-neck trim. If the collar is what attracts you, compare those necklines before choosing by the home or away label. If you want a lighter body colour, the pictured third shirt offers another visual option. These are observations of the listed photographs; check the selected garment version and measurements separately.
Do you need both home and away shirts?
You can support a team with one shirt. Add a second if it has a separate purpose for you: a different colour you will wear regularly, a design you want to collect, or a specific shirt you remember from a match. There is no need to complete the whole range just because the shirts are labelled home and away.
Compare the cost of the choice: select the size and any printing you want, then compare a basket with one shirt against a basket with both. Keep the delivery address and chosen options consistent, and read the current checkout totals. Base shirt prices alone do not settle the cost of the configured purchase.
If you are buying a gift, ask which exact design the recipient likes and check their garment measurements. The home shirt can suit someone who wants the familiar team look, but that preference cannot be assumed for every fan.
Compare the garment versions as well as the colours
These current Flux Jersey photographs show why the design and garment version need separate checks. The red home listing, blue player-labelled away listing and light third listing share a team and a season reference, but their colours, collars and visible marks differ. They are examples of listings rechecked on 9 October 2026, not photographs of match-issued historical garments.

“Away” identifies the design’s role; “Player Version” is a separate garment label. Comparing an away player-labelled item with a home item therefore involves more than colour. Read each item’s measurements and specifications rather than assuming equal fit or transferring a manufacturer’s official performance technology to a store listing.
What do home, away and third labels mean?
| Label | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Home | The primary design, usually associated with the team’s familiar colours. | A universal fit or an obligation for every home fixture. |
| Away | The main alternative, often called a change strip. | A shirt reserved exclusively for away games. |
| Third | An additional alternative in the kit range. | Better construction, limited production or a guaranteed solution to every clash. |
Why matchday shirt choices can differ from the labels
An away fixture does not automatically mean the team will wear its away shirt. IFAB Law 4.3 requires the teams to be distinguishable from each other and the match officials, with goalkeepers distinguishable from the other players and officials. Competition requirements and the agreed match colours determine the practical choice; check the club’s match information if you want a shirt associated with a particular fixture.
Even three designs may leave a clash. In its 9 August 2022 announcement, Newcastle said the Premier League considered all three of its 2022/23 kits too close to Brighton’s home colours. The club received special permission to wear a sky-blue design normally intended as a warm-up shirt, with black shorts and socks. This was a fixture-specific solution, rather than a general rule that any training shirt can be used.
Contrast also involves the complete outfit. The FA/UEFA guidance on colour blindness in football considers patterned shirts, shorts, socks and goalkeeper colours. A third shirt adds a design option; the label alone does not establish rarity, better construction or guaranteed contrast.
Check the exact item before ordering
Match the team, season, home/away/third label and sleeve style to the photographs. Then check the listed version, garment measurements and included pieces. In match discussion, “kit” may refer to the overall uniform; in a shop, the product description must tell you whether the purchase includes only the shirt or additional pieces.
Use our fan and player-style comparison guide for the measurement method and finishing checks. Names, numbers and patches at Flux Jersey are paid options; review the selected configuration and current checkout total rather than treating a pictured shirt as a promise that every extra is included.
The right label narrows down the design. The individual listing is what lets you choose the garment. Start with one shirt that matches your preferred look and listed measurements; add another only when it serves a separate purpose for you.
